Tianjin (CNS) – A towering statue of the Goddess Mazu was unveiled in Tianjin's Binhai Tourism Zone on Friday.

Standing at a height of 42 meters, it is the tallest of its kind in the world. The 14-story effigy is engraved with Mazu's life stories on its base and stands at the seaside in the northeastern municipality.

Hundreds of Mazu worshipers from the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao attended the unveiling ceremony.

The statue will be a central attraction of the Mazu Cultural Park, which is still under construction.

Mazu is worshiped in many areas of Southeast Asia, where she is said to protect sailors and fisherman from the rigors of the sea.
