Hong Kong (CNS) -- As of June 30, the number of people infected with HIV in Hong Kong had accumulated to 5,523, a record high for the city, a CNS reporter learned on Thursday at the 15th Anniversary of the Red Ribbon Centre.

The number of infections shot up by 12.6 percent in 2011, with 438 new cases.

The local government has launched a series of measures to control the spread of the disease, including a prevention program for mother-to-child transmission and a methadone treatment program, said Dr. Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health of the Hong Kong SAR.

As the number of HIV cases has increased among homosexual men, the government is paying more attention to prevention and control for this group, he added.
