Wuhan (CNS) -- Steel girders of both halves of the world's largest-span road-rail bridge were joined on Sunday.

Located in Hubei Province, the Huanggang Yangtze River Bridge is the sixth of its kind over the river.

Construction of the 4-kilometer double-decked bridge started in February 2010, with a total investment of over 2 billion yuan (US$316 million).

The lower of its decks will be a two-way high-speed railway, while the top will serve as a four-lane highway.

It is expected to go into operation by 2014.
