Beijing (CNS) -- The fifth Beijing Fringe Festival kicked off Monday at the National Center for the Performing Arts, featuring the three Taiwanese plays "Cheat to Cheat," "Sleep in Spring" and "Clear Life? +."

The cross-Straits cultures share a lot in common, but also have many differences, said Fu Weibo, general director the festival. Fu hopes young artists from both sides will brainstorm through exchanges.

The mainland market is vast, said Liao Junkai, director of "Cheat to Cheat," but a big difference is that most mainland plays are highly commercialized while Taiwanese audiences favor in-depth plays.

Over 60 plays will be staged at 12 theaters in Beijing until September 30, highlighting the works of young Chinese playwrights and actors.

The festival was originally named the "Beijing Youth Theater Festival. It has been held every September since 2008.
