Hong Kong (CNS) -- An ancient supervolcano that erupted at least 140 million years ago has been discovered in Hong Kong, local experts announced Thursday.

Located in the southeastern part of city, the High Island Supervolcano is tilted on its side at about 30 degrees and had an original diameter of about 18 km.

The supervolcano is thought to be the same type as the collapsed caldera that formed the Taal crater in the Philippines and the Tambora and Krakatau volcanoes in Indonesia, but on a much larger scale.

It took a lot of time and work to confirm the discovery, according to Denise Tang, a geotechnical engineer.

It is the first of its kind to be discovered in southeastern China, and has considerable significance to geotechnical analysis, Tang said.
