Xiangyang (CNS) – A group of ancient tombs has been discovered at a construction site in Xiangyang, a prefecture-level city in Hubei province, the Xiangyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology said Wednesday.

The site is near the Dengcheng Ruins where precious relics have been found, including the Tripod of Deng Gongcheng and the Sword of Fuchai.

Judging from several pieces of earthenware, the tombs date back nearly 2,000 years from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, said Chen Qianwan, chief of the institute.

The tombs are highly valuable to the study of the cultural changes that occurred in China's Central Plain, Chen added.

The site has been reported to higher organizations and is waiting for further excavation, he said.
