Urumqi (CNS) – Workers started picking cotton on August 27 at farms run by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps near Korla City, capital of the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture.

Cotton is abundant and ready to be harvested in northwest China thanks to continuous high temperatures and ample sunlight.

The full picking season will take place in early September, when an estimated 500,000 workers will be needed.

Xinjiang is China's major cotton-producing region. Its total cotton fields have topped 1.65 million hectares this year, and production is expected to increase 3.56 percent from last year to exceed 3.2 million tons.
