Changchun (CNS) -- More than 370,000 acres of autumn crops have been affected by an outbreak of armyworms in northeast China's Jilin Province.

Other major grain producing regions in northern and northeastern China have also reported armyworm invasions, including Liaoning Province, Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia, where one-third of the nation's corn production comes from.

The recent outbreak has brought larger losses to corn than expected, posing a severe threat to supplies.

The pest outbreak occurred at the same time as severe droughts in the United States, where the driest conditions in more than half a century have battered corn and soybean crops, causing an upsurge in global grain prices.
