Lanzhou (CNS) -- Based on Ministry of Transport regulations, the road surface subsidence discovered recently at the Tianding Expressway in Gansu Province is a "first-grade" quality problem, Ai Yude, an official from the provincial bureau of transportation, said Tuesday.
Seventeen people in charge of the project will be disciplined and may have to pay fines, he said.
The problems at the expressway were exposed by China Youth Daily last week, spurring local authorities to investigate.
The 235 km expressway is a major section of road connecting eastern, central and western China. It cost 8.7 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion) and went into full operation in May of last year.
