Beijing (CNS) -- The three Chinese astronauts began their life in space after successfully floating into the cabin of the space lab module Tiangong-1 on Monday. Despite being a few hundred kilometers above the ground, the technically isolated astronauts are communicating with their families via email and video.

At 15:46 pm, June 19, engineer Yu Tianyi at Beijing Aerospace Control Center sent a set of commands to the astronauts via text email, attaching audi and video files. This is the first email ever to connect the Earth-bound with people in outer space.

Regarding the choice of this communication media, email is more convenient and flexible compared to remote command, explained Li Jian, and the astronauts can use email to contact their families, as well as receive flight plans, guidance videos for tasks, and even movies and music for their entertainment on the long empty evenings.
