Chengdu (CNS) -- In a macabre event that took place on June 2, sixteen corpses wrapped in plastic bags fell out of an overturned truck on a freeway in Sichuan Province. The attention of tens of thousands of web users had been captured, and online debates ensued about the markets for corpses in China, according to local media on Monday.

Public discussion mainly surrounds three issuess: the legality of buying and selling corpses; the sources of these corpses, and whether it is an appropriate to the dead in a common truck rather than a refrigerated container, especially in hot weather.

The law in China prohibits private selling or purchasing, or any other commercial activity involving corpses. Local media coverage insisted it was declared on site that the corpses were purchased from Sichuan University to be used for educational purposes by Luzhou Medical College.

A spokesperson for Sichuan University on Monday refused to confirm the purchase, and stated that the institution will carry out an investigation on whether the corpses were donated voluntarily or if anyone within the university sold them on to Luzhou Medical College.
