London (CNS) -- Chinese artist Yao Jianping, known as the "queen of Su embroidery," handed over an embroidered portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to Prince Andrew as a gift on Thursday.

The work has been officially collected by Buckingham Palace as part of Britain's celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Prince Andrew met Yao and appreciated the portrait while listening to the artist describe the details of her craft. He said he would put the portrait at the Queen's house so she could immediately see it when she returns.

Suzhou embroidery (Suxiu) has a strong folkloric flavor and has been passed down from generation to generation by artisans. Yao, who is in her 40s, has been influenced by Su embroidery from an early age.

"To reflect the wisdom and kindness of the Queen, I had to divide each thin silk thread into 64 equal portions, with each strand hardly visible to the naked eye," said Yao.
