Hong Kong (CNS) -- Faced with a growing population, the Hong Kong government is working to increase its land supply to satisfy larger demands for housing and living space, a senior Hong Kong official said on Wednesday.

The Planning Department is conducting a study of multiple uses for over 2,500 hectares of land, which will help increase the land supply in the short, medium and long terms, said Secretary for Hong Kong Bureau Development Carrie Lam.

Lam said the local government is keeping an eye on land use in the New Territories and exploring abandoned and underutilized urban land for housing.

Lam Chun Chiu, director of A.G. Wilkinson & Associates, suggested the government should enhance reconstruction of industrial zones.
