Hong Kong (CNS) -- The H5N1 virus of a toddler diagnosed with bird flu is identical to samples collected from wild birds in 2011 and 2012, revealed the Centre for Health Protection of the Hong Kong SAR government on Monday.

According to the latest update, the 2-year-old boy is in serious condition and being treated at the children's intensive care unit. The reason for his obstructive hydrocephalus has not yet been discovered.

Hong Kong has raised its regional bird flu alert level and reported the emergency to the WHO and the mainland health authority.

The boy was found to be infected when he traveled to Hong Kong from Guangzhou. An investigation showed he had been to a local live poultry market in May. About 80 people who had contact with the boy have tested negative for the virus.
