Guangzhou (CNS) -- A 2-year-old Hong Kong boy recently diagnosed with H5N1 influenza had visited a live poultry market in Guangzhou where the virus has since been detected, but the exact source of the infection is difficult to determine, according to the Guangdong provincial health authority on Monday.

The boy, who lives with his parents and maternal grandmother in Guangzhou's Haizhu district, had visited the wet market on Nanyuan Street in mid-May.

The local health authority said they had immediately organized an epidemiological investigation and traced all of the boy's contacts after he was confirmed as having avian influenza on June 2.

Poultry cages, chopping boards and other materials at the market were tested. Five samples tested positive for the H5-type virus and one tested positive for the H9-type virus, the authority said.

By the evening of June 4, none of the boy's 23 contacts in Guangzhou were symptomatic or tested positive for bird flu, and no other related cases have been reported in the province.

Experts say it is an isolated case, and that there is a low possibility of a bird flu outbreak.
