Guangzhou (CNS) -- The two-month fishing ban on the Pearl River ended June 1. During the two months, 171 illegal fishing boats were apprehended and 70 tip-off calls were received, disclosed the Pearl River Basin Fishery Management Council.

This is the second year a fishing ban has gone into effect on the Pearl River. The ban involved 37 cities in six provinces along the river, that is, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan and Jiangxi. The closed section of the river was over 1,300 square kilometers and had an impact on 28,660 boats and 114,896 fishermen.

The management council commented that fishermen having to abandon their boats and normal activities affected their life to some extent, and this aroused government and public attention and sympathy.
