Dongguan (CNS) -- The China Spallation Neutron Source, China's most expensive project under the National Science and Technology Infrastructure program, has been launched in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, according to the Dongguan Urban Engineering Construction Administration Bureau on Tuesday.

The project's contracted cost is 524.9 million yuan (US$82.6 million) and will include China's first spallation neutron source to assist studies of physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials science, nanoscience, medical science, national defense and new generation nuclear power development.

By its expected completion in 2018, the project will fill China's gap in the application of pulsed neutrons. Only the U.S., the U.K. and Japan own such advanced technology so far.
