Shanghai (CNS) -- A German man named Wolfgang Wirtky donated more than 140 black-and-white photos of Shanghai shot during the 1930s and 1940s to the Shanghai Municipal Archives on Tuesday.

Wirtky, 73, is the son of the late Walter Wirtky, a photographer who captured Shanghai's street life in more than 14 boxes of photos, most of which were destroyed in the war.

Wolfgang was born at Huadong Hospital during his father's 10-year stay in Shanghai, but has spent most of his life outside China.

The donation was made on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-German diplomatic ties.
