Guangzhou (CNS) -- China's first local Beidou (Compass) Navigation System was launched in Guangzhou on Tuesday, a joint project of Guangdong's provincial government and the PLA General Armament Department.

The system will be applied to public services, government car management, vehicle monitoring and regional defense across the Pearl River Delta.

Guangdong now houses more than 400 companies in the satellite navigation industrial chain. The provincial authority expects the high technology to boost surveying and mapping, shipping, logistics, and mechanical control sectors, and thus to speed up regional industrial upgrading.

About a dozen academicians with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering attended the launch ceremony.
