Xi'an (CNS) – An increasing number of teenagers and young adults who were born after 1990 are forking out big sums for plastic surgery that lends them a superficial but advantageous charm, according to a source from a Xi'an hospital, Shaanxi Province,on March 8.

Since 2009, the hospital has seen higher volumes of females coming in for make-overs, and young women in their twenties make up the majority, said Dr. Jiang Wei who works at the Plastic Surgery Center of the Fourth Military Medical University.

Jiang said the nips and tucks for nose, lips, eyes and jaw line are not to correct serious problems but are merely "redecoration" to create a better impression. Procedures range from 5,000 to 10,000 yuan, a considerable investment.

According to related statistics, this post-90s generation currently accounts for over twenty percent of all plastic surgery services. The Chinese public is more open to cosmetic surgery, since social pressure to fight for better job and more comfortable lifestyle is the underlying trigger for pursuit of personal beauty.

"I just can't lose at the starting line! Many companies care about whether job candidates are good-looking or not," said Zhu Qixue, a college girl at Northwestern University. "Even if employers claim they are talent-centric,"she explained, "they still chose the qualified candidates with the more pleasing looks."
