Kuming (CNS) –Thailand Chiang Mai University (CMU) will set up a China Research center next year, its president Pongsak Angkasith announced during his visit to Yunnan Normal University on Wednesday.

"We will leverage the research center and the current Confucius Institute which was jointly established by CMU and Yunnan Normal University to promote Chinese studies in northern Thailand, and research on the Chinese economy and culture" he explained.

Yunnan Normal University president Yang Lin is enthusiastic about the initiative and commented: "We fully support your establishment of such a center, and offer our academic assistance and human resources."

In recent years, Chinese teaching cooperation programs have gradually become a highlight in Sino-Thai cultural exchanges, and they are evolving from a program of mutual visits by scholars to helping each other establish a specialized research institute.

Yang Lin also said he expects a Thailand Research Center will eventually be housed in their university, in addition to the current Thai center.
