Guangzhou (CNS) – A special fund in the amount of 100 million yuan will be set up to protect the rural environment in South China's Guangdong province in 2012, Chen Min, deputy director of the Guangdong Environmental Protection Department, said on Monday.

About 3 million people in rural areas of Guangdong have been facing a shortage of clean drinking water due to contamination and lagging infrastructure for environmental protection, added Chen.

Construction for the protection of rural drinking water supplies needs to be completed by 2013, when a protection zone for the source of drinking water will be set up, Chen said.
