Smartphone maker Huawei overtook its major rival OPPO and became the largest smartphone vendor in China in the first quarter of 2017, an industry report showed on Thursday.

With shipments of 20.8 million devices (up about 26 percent year-on-year), Huawei had 20 percent of the market, according to the report sent by industry research firm IDC to the Global Times on Thursday.

OPPO, Huawei's major rival, was ranked second with 18.9 million units shipped and 18.2 percent of the market.

"Huawei overtook OPPO in the first quarter of 2017 as its new model launches such as the Honor V9, P10 and P10 Plus were well received in the market while OPPO did not have any new product launches in this period," Tay Xiaohan, senior market analyst with IDC, said in the report.

U.S.-based Apple posted a double-digit year-on-year decline for the fifth quarter in a row, according to the report.
