China's biggest online retailer has banned buyers from searching for virtual reality (VR) devices related to pornography on its platform, after a recent report revealed that many store owners were using porn as promotional material.

Taobao VR retailers were found to be selling VR devices together with some 1,000 GB of free porn videos, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Sunday. Buyers could find such products by only searching for keywords such as "VR, resources" or "VR glasses, adult."

However, the Global Times found that such keywords had already been blocked in accordance with "related laws and regulations."

The Xinhua News Agency reported in January that a number of online shops selling VR devices are facing some real legal problems for sweetening their deals with free porn.

Moreover, three suspects in Shanghai were charged in December 2016 for sending customers more than 800 links to online pornography.

Links to videos were sent through QQ or shared on Baidu cloud drive accounts that held up to 2 TB of pornography.
