Audi will recall 680,925 vehicles in China for potential fire risks, starting from March 10, China's quality supervision authority said on Friday.

FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company's (FAW-VW) luxury division Audi will recall 680,925 units of the A4, A5, A6 and Q5 models because they have turbocharged engines with a coolant pump that can cause a fire when clogged with debris, according to a statement from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China on Friday.

FAW-VW is a joint venture between Chinese automaker FAW Group and Germany's Volkswagen Group.

This measure is part of a global recall affecting around 1.1 million units whose engine control units will require software updates to resolve the problem, said an Audi spokesperson.

Audi said it became aware of the overheating risk in 2015, and opened an investigation in 2016 which concluded in December.

Audi recalled 390,000 vehicles affected by coolant-pump malfunction in North America in late January.‍

Audi is just the latest high-end automaker to issue a recall in China. Both Mercedes Benz and BMW issued recalls earlier this week in China for various problems.
