Tesla vehicle deliveries miss targets in Q2

Tesla Motors delivered 14,370 vehicles to customers in the second quarter of this year, over 15 percent less than its own target, the U.S. electric-car maker has said.

The number of deliveries was also a decline of 450 vehicles from the previous quarter, making the California-based automaker unlikely to meet prior expectations for delivering 80,000 to 90,000 vehicles this year.

The decline was due to an "extreme production ramp up" and a number of custom-ordered vehicles still being shipped, Tesla said Sunday in a statement, adding that it anticipates delivering 50,000 vehicles in the second half of the year.

The company produced a total of 18,345 vehicles in the second quarter of this year, a 20 percent increase from the previous quarter, with nearly half of those vehicles produced in June, said the statement.

Last week, Tesla drew scrutiny as details emerged about the death of a driver using the semi-autonomous mode of a Tesla S, a luxury model.

The accident took place on May 7, and Tesla said Thursday it learned the evening before that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation into Tesla vehicle's autopilot feature.
