Mazda to recall vehicles over fire risks

Mazda Motor (China) Co., a subsidiary of Japanese automaker Mazda, is recalling 11,107 vehicles in China, China's quality watchdog said on Monday.

The affected vehicles were manufactured between June 1, 1992 and July 30, 1998, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

Mazda says it put too much grease on electrical contact points in the ignition switches when the cars were manufactured. The grease can carbonize and reduce electrical insulation, causing overheating and, in some cases, fire.

The company will check and replace the defective parts free of charge from Monday to May 15, 2016.
