Chinese telecom solution provider Huawei on Friday delivered a project that aims to promote resources sharing and educational exchanges among schools in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

The Addis Ababa School Net Project will create connectivity among 65 education institutions, including 64 secondary schools and one university college through information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure.

The Addis Ababa City Education Bureau has implemented the project that amounted to an investment of more than 240 million Ethiopian Birr (11.5 million U.S. dollars), according to bureau head Dilamo Otore.

Speaking during the delivery ceremony of the project at Menelik II Secondary School in Addis Ababa, Dilamo said the project enables the education system in the country to be supported with timely ICT technology.

"Today, we launch this infrastructure, a technology that will help educators and students in the teaching-learning process," said Dilamo.

Reiterating that Ethiopia and China have maintained positive relations and cooperation since they forged diplomatic ties 45 years back, Zhang Lin, Commercial Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, said a number of Chinese companies, including Huawei, are investing in Ethiopia, which benefited the country's development.

The Addis Ababa School Net Project is in line with an ICT package the east African country champions in a bid to utilize modern technology in the country's education system, said the minister.

Roger Wu, Vice CEO of Huawei Ethiopia, said by successfully carrying out the project Huawei contributes to educational development in Ethiopia.

With long-term ICT capacity building cooperation, Huawei will help the Addis Ababa City Education Bureau in its future capacity building in the area, he said.
