The Alibaba Group has named a former Goldman Sachs Group executive as president of the company.

Michael Evans will be responsible for leading and executing Alibaba's international growth strategy and expand the business outside of China. That's according to a statement the company filed with the New York Stock Exchange.

Alibaba Group CEO Daniel Zhang says the company has been laying the foundation for globalization for years and now needs a global team to realize the ambition.

Evans had served as an independent director of Alibaba since the company's IPO in September 2014. Evans served as vice chairman of Goldman Sachs prior to joining Alibaba and also was a onetime Olympic rowing gold medalist.
