A new policy aiming to standardize beverage labeling nationwide, specifically for bottled drinking water, has been unveiled on May 24, 2015, the Beijing Youth Daily reports.

According to the new standards, bottled water sold in China will be labeled as "purified bottled water" or "other drinking water."

Bottled water labeled as "energy water" or "functional water" will be banned from store shelves.

There will also be a different made between "mineral spring water" and what is currently labeled as "mineral substance water," which refers to water that had minerals artificially added to it during the production process.

The "mineral substance water" label will be banned because it can be confused with bottled water labeled as "mineral spring water."

A spokesman from Master Kong, a major bottle water producer in China, said the company has removed the "mineral substance water" tags from its products to comply with the coming regulation.

Beverage conglomerate Coca-Cola also said it will comply with the new regulations.

Still, bottled water produced before the new regulations will be allowed to sell in China until Jan. 1, 2016.
