Dyson Ltd, the British manufacturer of bladeless fans and bagless vacuum cleaners, will begin selling its first purifier in the Chinese mainland market in May, according to a press release e-mailed to the Global Times Wednesday.

With the air purifier that can also act as a fan, Dyson is set to cash in on an arena that has emerged as a growing promising market in China where air pollution raises a lot of concerns.

The latest estimate by Euromonitor International, a UK-based market information provider, showed that China is expected to overtake the US as the world's largest market for air purifiers in 2015, and the size of the air purifier market in China will be 1.5 times that of the US market in 2018.

The new machine introduced by Dyson, which will sell for 5,190 yuan ($837.15) according to the press release, is set to pit the British firm against many other vendors that are already targeting the upscale portion of the market.

In February, a total of 539 different air purifier models were sold in the mainland market, with those priced above 4,000 yuan accounting for 32.3 percent, the most crowded segment of the market, according to data released Tuesday by Chinese tech portal zol.com.cn, also known as Zhongguancun Online.
