A haul of 1,300 bladeless fans that infringed the intellectual property rights of British technology company Dyson Ltd were destroyed yesterday in Shanghai's pilot free trade zone, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said.

The case came to light in August last year after Dyson contacted Shanghai Customs to complain that Sichuan Province-based Fengwansheng had breached its patent.

Customs officials studied the Chinese fans, which were bound for sale in Japan, and found in favor of Dyson.

In April, the court awarded the British firm 240,000 yuan (US$39,000) in compensation. It also told Fengwansheng to stop making the fans and to destroy those it had already produced.

When it failed to do so, Dyson applied for an enforced destruction order and the court dispatched officers to destroy the 1,300 fans.

The enforced destruction was the first ever to be enacted in the free trade zone.

Dyson's bladeless fans sell for between 3,000 and 4,000 yuan, while the Fengwansheng replicas cost just US$32.60 apiece.
