Rather than a competitor, China could be a strategic partner for Mexico in developing attractive commercial projects in the coming years, an international business expert said Thursday.

Julio Cesar Martinez Suarez, teaching at International Trade and Transport at London Metropolitan University, told Xinhua in an interview that Mexico should increase its trade with China from the current low level.

"Mexico needs to propose a different strategy. The country must now make decisions that start to bear fruit in the coming years, and that, of course, will benefit both Chinese and Mexican entrepreneurs," Maritinez said.

"The key is to establish long-term trade ties with China, keeping in mind that these could last for years," the expert said.

The business expert noted that the recent reforms launched by the Mexican government will provide new opportunities for cooperation with China in the coming years.

Mexican entrepreneurs interested in the Chinese market should focus on innovative projects to attract Chinese investors, Martinez added.

China is Mexico's second largest trading partner after the United States.
