South Korea's Transportation Ministry said Monday that it has ordered US automaker Ford Motor to recall 2,216 Escape sport utility vehicles (SUVs) for defects in airbags, cooling systems and door handles.

Ford Sales and Service Korea, the local importer and distributor of Ford Motor, was ordered to recall 859 Escape models produced between May 22, 2012 and Jan. 31, 2014 for faulty side airbags that may fail to be deployed on a software problem, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

A problem with the cooling system was detected in 424 Escape SUVs, made between July 28, 2012 and March 1, 2013, as the defective cooling system can cause cracks in cylinder head and oil leakage.

A total of 933 vehicles had defective door handles in danger of opening when the car is driving, according to the ministry.

Owners of the faulty vehicles can contact the service centers operated by the Ford Sales and Service Korea from Tuesday. Those who had their cars repaired in advanced can be reimbursed for their costs.
