China's National Energy Administration said recently that the nation plans to install nuclear power capacity of 8.64 million kilowatts in 2014, start approving major nuclear power projects, and promote nuclear power construction in coastal areas, the Beijing-based Economic Information Daily newspaper reported Monday.

Insiders said that the policy means that coastal nuclear power construction will be speeded up in 2014.

So far, China has 17 nuclear plants units with an installed capacity of 14.74 million kilowatts.

Another 29 nuclear power plants units are under construction with an installed capacity of 31.66 million kilowatts, which are expected to be put into operation by 2015.
