China needs to improve the quality and stability of cloud-based services by establishing industrial standards, industry insiders urged on Thursday.

The rapid growth of the public cloud market in recent years has seen an uneven level of service provided by different data centers, said the China Academy of Telecommunication Research under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

China is also working on a series of regulations, policies and standards for local cloud providers, the academy said, without giving a timetable.

Liu Duo, vice-president of the academy, said local cloud service providers should develop self-discipline when selling their services.

"Cloud computing is a key link for mobile Internet use and the government's plans of boosting information consumption largely depend on the development of mobility. That's why a well established cloud service system is essential for the entire national strategy," said Liu.
