Key indicators that measure the operation and profitability of Chinese airlines are rising, but weaker than expected, an official said.

"In 2012, domestic carriers' revenue ton kilometers (RTK) grew at an annual rate of 6.28 percent, revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) rose 9.16 percent year-on-year, and cargo revenue ton kilometers (RFTK) jumped 1.92 percent from 2011, all slower than the target growth rates," said Tian Baohua, a member of an advisory group to the Ministry of Transport.

According to the nation's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), RTK is expected to grow at 13 percent annually, RPK should rise at 11 percent, and RFTK should grow at 10 percent, Tian added.

The sluggish global economy, slowing demand and rising fuel costs, have dented growth.
