2012-10-10 10:15 Xinhua     Web Editor: qindexing comment

EVA Airways Corp. (EVA), Chinese Taiwan's second largest carrier, launched direct flight between Taipei and Yangon on Tuesday, according to airline sources.

EVA is another foreign airline that has extended wing to Yangon in two months after Korean Air and Qatar Airways.

Using MD-90 jets, EVA Air will operate the Taipei-Yangon route three times a week.

The introduction of the direct flight from the region is expected to bring more than 30 percent of EVA's future clients, who will be North American passengers, to Myanmar via Taiwan.

Taiwan's largest carrier China Airlines currently operates five flights per week between Taipei and Yangon and it will increase the number of flights to seven per week starting Oct. 28.

Meanwhile, Myanmar's national carrier, the Myanmar Airways International (MAI), will also launch direct flights between Yangon and China's Hong Kong before the end of this year.

There are five more foreign airlines -- Dragon Air, All Nippon Airways, Singapore Airlines, Germany-based Condor Airlines and Trans Asia Airways -- preparing to fly Myanmar.

Up to now, there has been a total of 16 foreign airlines that have stretched wings to Yangon.

In addition to the 64-year-old state-operated domestic Myanma Airways (MA), there are also five private-run domestic airlines in Myanmar, namely Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways, Air Bagan, Asian Wings and Air Kanbawza.
