Australia should resist the temptation to fall back into narrow nationalistic sloganeering about Chinese investment, the nation's Foreign Minister Bob Carr said here Friday.

Speaking at the Australia in China's Century Conference in Sydney on Friday, Carr said that Australia should consider the challenging consequences of a more transparent Chinese politics, such as the force of Chinese nationalism.

"We should resist the temptation of falling back on narrow, nationalistic sloganeering when it comes to Chinese investment in Australia," he told the conference.

Carr said Chinese direct investment in Australia in 2011 accounted for only 2.6 percent of total overseas investment, well behind the United States, UK, Japan and the Netherlands.
