Chinese dairy giants disappear in HK supermarkets

(Ecns.cn)--Though Mengniu and Yili, two Chinese dairy giants, still dominate the domestic market, their products can hardly find shelf space in Wellcome and PARKnSHOP, Hong Kong's two largest supermarkets, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily, Wednesday.

A man using his Weibo account under the name Xiu Wenhui made a post on March 18 complaining that he found no Mengniu or Yili product in either Wellcome or PARKnSHOP when he was traveling in Hong Kong.

A check on the information proved that he is correct. Employees from both supermarkets admitted that they have stopped selling Mengniu and Yili products, but did not disclose why, according to the report.

Mengniu and Yili being pulled off the shelves did not have much impact on Hong Kong residents who prefer local or imported dairy products. "My family liked to buy HK produced dairy products when I was young, so the two brands' disappearing influences me very little," said Michelle, a HK citizen.
