Tate and Shanghai Museum have announced that the exhibition Landscapes of the Mind: Masterpieces from Tate Britain (1700-1998) will take place in China from April 26 to Aug. 5 at the Shanghai Museum.

The biggest exhibition of its kind to be held in China, the event documents the development of British landscape painting over 300 years and will feature 70 masterpieces.

Curated by Richard Humphreys, the exhibition begins with the great topographical and classical painters of the 18th century before moving on to the Romantic, Pre-Raphaelite and Impressionist artists of the 19th century, and culminating with the pioneering modernists of the 20th century. It will also tell the story of the wider historical and cultural development of Britain.

"This exhibition draws on Tate's unrivalled collection of British art, bringing together the work of artists from across the centuries in a wide range of media: oil paintings, watercolors, prints and photographs," said Maria Balshaw, director of Tate.

"China and Britain have a strong tradition of landscape painting and Tate is proud to be able to share its collection with the Shanghai Museum and visitors in China."
