Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the closing meeting of the first session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday.[Special Coverage]
At the beginning of his speech, President Xi reaffirmed his commitment to serve the people and fulfill his legal obligations.
He urged the civil servants at all levels to always put the people at the highest place, wholeheartedly serve the people and work for the people's interests and happiness.
"People are the creators of the history and they are the real heroes," Xi said, saying the magnificent history of Chinese civilization has been written by its great people.
Happiness comes with hard work, said President Xi, noting that if the Chinese people hold the spirit of working hard, we can achieve the goal of creating a better life.
Xi stressed that Chinese people are well aware that unity is power and the driving force to move the nation forward, adding it is impossible for a divided and fractured nation to advance.
Noting China is a socialist state under the people's democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants, President Xi said all power in the country belongs to the people.
"We must always be people-oriented and let the people be the master of the nation. We must learn from our people and listen to their voices," the president said, saying what the people advocate, what the people approved and accepted should be regarded as the measurement of the work.
As long as people have confidence in the government, the country will have a future and power, Xi said.
During the annual session, which started on March 5, lawmakers elected state leaders and approved a restructuring plan on the State Council. They also approved several work reports, including those from the government, the NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
A draft supervision law, the 2018 national economic and social development plan as well as the 2018 central and local budgets were also passed.
