Yang was born on July 30, 1928. On Dec 13, 1937, the first day of the six-week rampage which claimed the lives of more than 300,000, her father Yang Bingrong was guarding a house with her uncle when they encountered a group of Japanese soldiers. Her father was stabbed to death while her uncle had a narrow escape.

Yang moved to a refugee camp at Ginling College with her family members. In her testimonies about the massacre she said Japanese soldiers went to the camp to search for women. Her two sisters had to hide and she witnessed many people being killed by the Japanese soldiers.
