Climate change is a huge challenge that faces all of mankind, and the thorough study of the oceans has become the key to solving this global issue.

The Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QLNM) has been in operation since 2015, building a global network of worldwide resources to carry out cutting-edge and strategic technological innovations.

In line with the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, QNLM strives to use Chinese wisdom to help find a solution to climate change.

Making accurate and detailed predictions of the Earth's climate using high-resolution computers and climate system models will help mitigate the negative impact of climate change. QNLM, together with the National Center for Atmospheric Research and Texas A&M University, is jointly promoting the construction of the International Laboratory for High-Resolution Earth System Predictions (iHESP).

iHESP is the second laboratory co-established by QNLM and a world-leading Earth science research institute, the first being the International Center for Southern Hemisphere Oceans Research (CSHOR) in Hobart, Australia.

In accordance with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, CSHOR aims to bring together global marine resources to collaborate on southern hemisphere oceans and Antarctic research and promote the development of marine science and technology in China.

Based in both the US and Qingdao, iHESP will focus on research into high-resolution Earth system predictions. It will also enhance cooperation with other international programs, aiming to become a global center for Earth system simulations and prediction research.
