Trying to find a lost phone in the ocean is most likely to end up a lost cause.

But days after her honeymoon, one lucky Chinese newlywed who dropped her phone while snorkeling off the Northern Mariana Islands got a surprise package in the mail - sent from within China, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The woman, surnamed Yuan, said she and her husband had been in shallow waters near their hotel in the US territory when her phone - sealed in a waterproof bag - slipped from her hands.

With it went all the honeymoon photos of her and her new husband, surnamed Gu.

"When it happened I cried, I was so hurt," said Yuan.

After a lot of time spent kicking around the sand and enlisting the help of other Chinese tourists, Yuan and Gu reluctantly returned home to Suzhou on November 19.

For most, that's where the story would end.

But not long after, another Chinese tourist who had been snorkeling for sea cucumbers in the same spot came across the phone.

The tourist, from Beijing, quickly realized the phone belonged to a Chinese, brought it back home with him and handed it over to his daughter, surnamed Wang.

Meanwhile, Yuan's father said he was canceling service to the phone when he decided to try and call it one last time.

That's when he got through to Wang.

"I had been waiting for the owner to call," said Wang, adding she had kept the phone on her at all times, just in case. "You should return found things to their owners. No questions about it," said Wang.

After a back and forth to verify her identity, Wang sent the phone to Suzhou.

Yuan was finally reunited with her honeymoon photos on Friday, along with a little note wishing them the best.

"Life is like that - never give up," read the note.
