Chinese courts have dealt with 831 public interest litigation cases initiated by procuratorates over the past two years, with 455 of them resolved, the Supreme People's Court (SPC) said Tuesday.

A total of 645 of the cases involved administrative litigation, with 362 cases concluded, according to a televised conference by the SPC.

In July 2015, the Supreme People's Procuratorate began a pilot reform allowing procuratorates to initiate public interest litigations in 13 provincial regions.

China's top legislature passed the revised civil and administrative procedure laws in June this year to allow prosecutors to institute public interest litigation.

The reform aims to better protect the interests of the nation and the public, especially in protection of the environment and resources, and food safety among others.

Addressing the meeting on Tuesday, Jiang Bixin, vice president of the SPC, urged efforts to facilitate the path for litigation, resolve social conflicts in accordance with the law and maintain social stability.

Efforts should also be made to protect the rights of social organizations to file lawsuits and participate in public interest litigations, Jiang said.
