Security on Halloween night was beefed up on Tuesday in South California in the wake of an act of terror in New York City that killed at least eight people.

Officials at Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) said they were enhancing security at the annual Halloween Carnaval in West Hollywood, which typically attracts hundreds of thousands of costumed celebrants. The event is billed as the world's largest Halloween party.

"Our Volunteer team is out tonight, adding extra eyes and ears during tonight's festivities," the LASD West Hollywood Station tweeted.

A rented pickup truck plowed into pedestrians near the World Trade Center in New York City on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens, police said.

As costumed characters arrived for the evening of fun, a higher police presence was visible in an effort to make everyone feel safe.

"If you see something, say something at #WeHoHalloween. Call 911 or speak to any @WHDLASD Deputy you see. Safety first!" the city of West Hollywood tweeted. "Public safety remains the #1 priority for the 2017 West Hollywood Carnaval."

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), meanwhile, had a large presence in and around Dodger Stadium for Tuesday night's World Series game.

"We are closely monitoring the situation on the East Coast and communicating with (the New York Police Department) and our federal law enforcement partners, and at this point there is no nexus to Los Angeles," the City News Service quoted the LAPD as saying.

"Tonight we have a heightened sense of awareness for the potential of terrorist acts, however, it is our priority to ensure the safety and security of anyone attending high-profile events in the city and had already planned on a highly visible LAPD presence at the game tonight," an LAPD statement read.
