A professor in Central China is keeping tabs on chronic class skippers by making his students sign in through their GPS-enabled smartphones.
According to the new policy at Hunan Agricultural University (HUNAU), students of professor Wang Jianlin's class are required to sign in through a WeChat group and include their GPS-tagged location.
The method was designed to discourage students from skipping class or asking classmates to sign in for them.
Wang, who teaches the master's course in Chinese socialism, said the system also is a great way to increase class participation.
"We'll know the location and the attendance of our students, which can give them a little extra pressure to study," said Wang.
However, the article failed to address obvious loopholes in the new attendance system, such as students with two phones.
