Shanghai plans to build a 120-kilometer green path on the Outer Ring greenbelt by 2020, where residents are able to walk, cycle and do other leisurely exercises, according to a Sunday report by thepaper.cn.
The Outer Ring greenbelt lies along the S20 Outer Ring Expressway. According to the plan, it will take up 6,208 hectares and extend 98 kilometers. Since construction was started in 1995, about 3,700 hectares have been completed as of 2016.
The completed greenbelt and its natural surroundings will integrate multiple functions including ecological protection, leisure and fitness, noise reduction and emissions reduction.
Authorities also said that the new paths will not only provide a cleaner space where the public can get close to nature, but also will help optimize the functions of the greenbelt, by encouraging people to use the green method of living and traveling.
