Russian President Vladimir Putin has awarded former Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak the Order of Alexander Nevsky.

The honor was granted for his great contribution to the implementation of Russia's foreign policy, said a presidential decree published Monday on the official website of legal information.

Replaced by Anatoly Antonov, Kislyak returned to Russia in July after serving as the Russian envoy to the United States for nine years.

Kislyak met with senior campaign aides to Donald Trump during the 2016 U.S. presidential race, which later became the center piece of the controversy over Russia's alleged interference in the election.

The United States has accused Russia of interfering with the election, but Moscow has strongly rejected the allegation.
